With Greek, Turkish and Italian influence, among others, there’s no doubting that Cypriot food is comforting and delicious. The climate of this famous Mediterranean island also allows for some truly fresh and flavorful ingredients to be used in Cypriot cuisine.
Out of all their traditional foods, the Cypriots are most proud of their very own Halloumi cheese. Halloumi is almost always served in traditional taverns as an appetizer, either raw or grilled.
‘Souvlaki’ or Souvla is a true blessing for anyone who is a fan of barbecued meat. Meat is grilled on an open flame while family members and close friends gather. While waiting for the souvlaki, people usually drink Ouzo (local liquor) or Zivania (traditional Cypriot spirit) and dance Sirtaki or Zembekiko. Below, take a look at some of our favourite Cypriot dishes.
Tirokafter
Tirokafteri is made from feta cheese, garlic, yoghurt, olive oil and pepper. This dish is often served in local taverns. Top fresh bread with Tirokafteri and munch it away while you enjoy a shot of Zivania.
Souvlaki
This dish is prepared on an open flame using either chicken, pork or lamb. Generally, souvlaki is prepared outdoors and is often served on special occasions. This dish is also served with tzatziki, a yoghurt and cucumber sauce.
Moussaka
Moussaka is as iconic to Cypriot cuisine as lasagna is to Italian cuisine. Moussaka is prepared using meat (beef or lamb), potatoes and aubergine. All are topped with a bechamel sauce and baked in the oven until golden and bubbly.
Haloum
Haloumi is a very popular cheese dish in Cyprus. The cheese is made using goat cheese, sheep cheese and rennet. Haloumi can be fried or grilled without falling apart. It is often served with sliced watermelon.
