“Years ago, when I was backpacking through western Europe, I was just outside Barcelona hiking in the foothills of Mount Tibidabo. I was at the end of this path and I came to a clearing” (“The Videotape”, S8 X E4). Well, you know how it goes in this episode of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. In his fantasy world, Ken Adams (Joey Tribbiani) couldn’t resist going to Europe and enjoying a very secluded lake with tall trees. Now, you may or may not see a beautiful crying woman bathing herself across the lake, but each time you step into a land you have never visited before, you are bound to have an experience of a lifetime.

The film buff inside me couldn’t stop wondering what other places in and around Europe take the traveller to another world or realm (Asgard, I am coming for you). If you have been to the following locations and had a déjà vu, there is a possibility, you have already been there from the lives of your below-mentioned beloved characters. Enough opening credits, let’s get down to action!

Iceland

Dramatic rocky beaches, dazzling mountains, black volcanic deserts, infinite fields of pushed snow, and rugged glaciers. This wonderful herbal splendor and extraordinarily varied surroundings make Iceland the right filming location, and the film industry sure knows how to capture it. Check out the following places where a number of the recognized films have been filmed and add them to your Iceland Bucket List!

Captain America: Civil War (2016)

Even before the Avengers had Assembled, Bucky Barnes was programmed in Siberia (Location in the movie: Vík in South Iceland). Our beloved winter soldier was converted into a HYDRA assassin here and wiped off his memory, making him one of the most dangerous assassins in the world.

The second trailer of Captain America: Civil War, had caused a stir among fans of the Marvel superhero universe. The trailer reveals the first glimpses of Iceland in the movie. The village is surrounded by beautiful valleys, dramatic cliffs, stunning mountains, and black sandy beaches. Great secrecy surrounded the shoots, some of which took place near the town of Vík in South Iceland - an increasingly popular destination with film crews.

Interstellar (2014)

Dr. Mann falsified his report on the planet being habitual. As found on Mann’s planet, the ray of hope soon faded away as he went on to try and murder Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) to complete his mission and go back home. The planet has seen (Location: Svínafellsjökull glacier) was made up of many sharp ridges that are much more beautiful to behold while not possible to climb on. Luckily the planet had 80% gravitational potential of Earth, making it possible for our astronauts to climb the rugged ice mountains.

Interstellar was partially shot at Svínafellsjökull Glacier. The film's other filming location in Iceland was Máfabót, a lowland area between the open sea and a river on the South Coast. Icelandic scenery also featured heavily in promotional material for the film.

Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008)

The Journey to the Centre of the Earth begins with the Snæfellsjökull glacier/volcano is a movie adaption of the classic novel by Jules Verne. “The entry point” to the center of the Earth was fitting to shoot Trevor trying to escape the lightning. Do not worry, you will not be stuck in a cave and forced to embark on a journey if you don’t want to.

Snæfellsjökull is a glacier-capped volcano found on the tip of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in west Iceland. It stands in a National Park of the same name - one of the only three National Parks in the country. On a completely unrelated topic, Guide to Iceland also states on November 5th, 1993, some paranormal enthusiasts believed there would be an alien landing. Though the evening passed without a galactic invasion, the incident seemed to have caught the eye as a shooting location to many producers and film crew.

Thor: The Dark World (2013)

Back to our favorite Avengers, several scenes of Thor: The Dark World were shot in Iceland, making it one of the most extensive film projects to have ever taken place in Iceland. Thor, in Norse mythology, is the hammer-wielding god of thunder and lightning. Generally associated with strength, storms, and protection of mankind, he also guards the Realm of Asgard. Here are a few locations as seen in the movie.

  • Landmannalaugar

With a bit of CGI and makeover, Landmannalaugar was converted into scenes of the black sand landscapes of Svartalfheim, Realm of the Dark Elves, near the volcano, Hekla, in South Iceland. You may not bump into the Dark Elves but surely be stunned by the colorful oasis in the Highlands, mystically surrounded by mountains and steaming hot springs.

  • Ásbyrgi and the Dettifoss waterfall

How many of you wanted to visit the Realm of Asgard? I am sure all crazy fans out there have woken up in their dreams guarding the Realm along with Heimdall, the gatekeeper. Well here’s your chance. Iceland provides the mountains and lakes which you see in scenes that are set in the Realm of Asgard.

The Star Wars Saga (2015, 2016)

May the 4th, we celebrate. Star wars, we love.

Many of the wintry scenes as seen in George Lucas's epic space opera featured Icelandic scenes in both The Force Awakens and Rogue One. Icelandic scenery was used as a backdrop for Hoth, the ice planet, in The Force Awakens. Also, for Eadu (Location: Reynisfjara), the planet where the mission to assassinate Galen Erso takes place in Rogue One.

Malta, at first glance, may feel petite, but the natural beauty coupled with stunning architecture sets the stage for some of the biggest movies and series. If the view of Malta in person offers a spectacular variety of landscapes, I can only imagine what wonders it does on-screen. From blonde stretches of arid land and rugged, sea-carved coastlines to startling blue skies and ancient medieval architecture, Malta is every director's dream.

World War Z (2013)

A zombie apocalypse is on the rise depicting the extinction of humanity. World War Z sets aside the common zombie movies and was not praised by the critics. Yet, we can’t help but be charmed by Brad Pitt taking us around the streets of Valletta and Gozo. The majority of the film was shot on the streets of Valletta, Malta.

The iconic zombie pile-up scene was filmed using Fort St Elmo at the National War Museum (stand-in city Jerusalem). The Fort is also home to the National War Museum, which could be interesting if you’re looking to learn about Malta’s rich and diverse wartime history!

Troy (2004)

You do not need many reasons to witness the crystal-clear waters and the stunning limestone backdrops of Blue Lagoon, Comino, but I will give you one either way. Troy is an epic film loosely based on Homer's Iliad "The Trojan War" set in Malta. Achilles and the Greeks reach the Trojan shore at Ghajn Tuffieha Bay, on the island’s northwest coast, alongside the popular Golden Bay.

No other location could have brought out the life of the medieval scenery the way the historical Fort Ricasoli did. Just like the movie Gladiator, this fort served as an absolute backdrop as an entrance to the Trojan city. Brad Pitt loved the island so much that during his time filming Troy as Achilles. He purchased a not so little piece of Maltese heaven.

Game of Thrones (2011 – 2019)

I know I talked about Game of Thrones in the last blog, but it is impossible to miss out on some Game of Thrones content. You may be familiar with the iconic 'Azure Window' that served as the backdrop to Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen's wedding? Unfortunately, you can not visit and click photos with that rock structure as it fell in 2017 due to sea and wind erosion, but here are places you shouldn't miss out on before it is too late.

St Dominic's Convent in Rabat (the Red Keep Garden) is where Ned Stark confronts Cersei about the father of her children being her twin brother, Jamie Lannister, and not King Robert. Ned further threatens to tell this to King Robert. Cersei says the iconic line, 'When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.' (1x7)

Malta's Mdina was where Catelyn and Ser Rodrik Cassel rode into King's Landing to try and establish what led to Bran's fall. Ned later says goodbye to his wife Catelyn as she sets off from King's Landing after the death of King Robert. (1x3)

Popeye (1980)

"I'm Popeye the Sailor Man

I'm Popeye the Sailor Man

I'm strong to the finish

Cause I eat my spinach

I'm Popeye the Sailor Man"

The Popeye theme song is probably one of the most famous theme songs ever written. Aren’t you whistling the hornpipe tune, right now? How about we tell you and your partner to put on Popeye and Olive costumes and head on to the location where Robin Williams shot the 1980 classic film. A whole film set was built specifically for the movie, which is now an attraction called Popeye Village, in the aptly named Anchor Bay, on the outskirts of Mellieha. The village has been repurposed into an amusement park, full of brightly colored houses featured in the film! A great spot for a family-fun day and to introduce your kids to how movies were made before CGI and green screens! The set is located on a cliff, looking out onto the beautiful blue waters of the Mediterranean.

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is a magnificent and magical location, making it ideal for films of all genres. From Marilyn Monroe to Melissa McCarthy, Niagara Falls, USA has served as a backdrop for films in various genres, including comedy, drama, and, of course, romance. Suppose you are a Niagara Falls native or a movie enthusiast like myself. In that case, you can readily see the Falls from a distance, but if you are unaware, here are some of the most prominent movies that were filmed right here in Niagara Falls, USA.

Bruce Almighty (2003)

Bruce Nolan, played by Jim Carrey, is a television reporter in Buffalo, N.Y. and nothing ever seems to go in his favor. For every mishap, he blames it all on God, played by Morgan Freeman. There is a scene called "Bruce Breakdown" when he is seen reporting live from the Maid of the Mist Boat Ride and gets to know that Evan (Steve Carell) gets promoted instead of himself. Grace (Jennifer Aniston) anxiously wants her boyfriend not to break down at the moment, but Bruce has had it. He conducts a sarcastic yet funny interview and soon gets fired from the job.

Well, instead of staying up in a "comfy news studio sucking up all the glory," get on the now popularly called Hornblower Niagara Cruises that brings visitors right underneath the plummeting falls and witness the falls like Bruce. Either way, you'll feel the mist!

Wall-E (2008)

The heart-warming 2008 film Wall-E is a computer-animated science fiction film. So what is this doing in this blog? I have a unique experience for you. As you stand at Luna Island in Niagara Falls State Park, close your eyes and listen to the sounds of rushing power of the Falls. wall e filming locations
Those wind sounds were provided for Wall•E's world! The voice actor and sound designer, Benjamin Burtt had visited Niagara Falls in 1987 and used his recordings from his trip for the sounds of wind.

The Office (2009) (Season 6, Episode 4 and 5)

Niagara Falls is famous for its mist and the lovers enjoying it. No wonder our favorite “Office Couple” Pam & Jim said their “I do’s” on the iconic Maid of the Mist, though it was their Plan C. (:-P)

the office shooting location

Bring your officiant, invite your office mates, and head to "The Honeymoon Capital of the World", also known as Niagara Falls! One of the most memorable reasons to go to Niagara Falls is to put on a poncho and board a Maid of the Mist boat. Since the 1840s, these boats have been transporting visitors to and from the base of the falls.

Netherlands

From huge war pictures to bittersweet comedies, we take a look at a few Dutch films that made you flinch, laugh and cry. Windmills, clogs, and tulips are still traditional pictures of the Netherlands for many people. However, dig into the realm of Dutch cinema and you will quickly learn that this small country has so much more to offer. These films delve into the country's rich culture and history, which is dotted with lush canals, attractive bridges, and old structures.

The Fault in Our Stars (2014)

The Fault in Our Stars continues to motivate tourists to visit Amsterdam after stirring the hearts of countless on the big screen. The film is about two terminally sick teenagers, Hazel and Gus (Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort). They fly to Amsterdam in search of a novelist and to know the incomplete ending to his work.

Based on John Green's best-selling novel, this film was so popular that the bench overlooking Leidsegracht 4, where Hazel and Gus confessed their love for each other, was stolen. It has subsequently been replaced by a replica and is covered in graffiti from fans. You can re-enact the beautiful scene by visiting the renowned bench or you can see the Arches of the Rijksmuseum where Hazel and Augustus went hand in hand.
Okay? Okay.

Dunkirk (2017)

I am sure you have loved the commercial successes like Interstellar, Inception, and The Dark Knight trilogy. Dunkirk is a Christopher Nolan war movie shot on the Dutch IJsselmeer near Urk. Did you know, the crew was welcomed to the village of Urk under the condition that they would respect local religious values? This meant no filming on Sunday as it is considered a day of rest in the strongly conservative Dutch community.

A few combat scenes, including placing up to 60 extras in a boat designed to hold less than ten people, were shot in this village of Urk. The war movie focuses on the massive evacuation of 340,000 Allied troops from the seaport of Dunkirk in northern France in 1940. Dunkirk’s cast includes Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy, and teen heartthrob Harry Styles.

The Diary of Anne Frank (1959)

Taking you a little further back in time, "The Diary of Anne Frank" is an adaptation of the play (not from the diary) and probably the most well-known film version of the young Jewish girl's Amsterdam life in hiding. Even for those who have not seen the movie, the horrors and the experiences recounted by Anne Frank have been ringing in our ears, even decades later. Anne’s diary, which she kept for nearly two years, has been immortalized in countless documentaries, films, books. Nonetheless, this 1959 film directed by George Stevens is one of the most memorable of them all.

Anne is a young Jewish girl who is forced into hiding with her family along with another family in Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation of World War II. She keeps a diary, penning down her thoughts and experiences. In this journey, you'll see glimpses of Amsterdam in some scenes as Anne longs for freedom. The exteriors of the film were shot at the actual building in Amsterdam called Anne Frank House, which is now one of the most visited museums in the Netherlands.

Morocco

Many movie enthusiasts, moviegoers, and cinephiles worldwide have seen a significant amount of Moroccan landscapes in Hollywood films - without realizing it. Morocco is a popular filming location for desert-themed films around the world. Morocco is attracting an increasing number of directors and producers since it is one of the most stable countries in the area and has a low cost of doing business. Check out some of these films shot in Morocco.

The Mummy (1999)

Even decades after the release, The Mummy, is probably the first movie name that will pop out when talking about barren landscapes. This adventure thriller starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz makes us laugh even at the most nail-biting moments (special thanks to John Hannah as Jonathan Carnahan).

the mummy 1999 shooting locations

The film is set in Egypt, but primarily shot in Morocco. An entire set for the mythical Egyptian city of Hamunaptra was erected in the southeastern Moroccan desert. The set for this imaginary city was built in a dormant volcanic crater near Erfoud, a real-life oasis hamlet. Fast forward two years and “The Mummy Returns” returns to Morocco as a sequel to Stephen Sommers' 1999 smash picture. The Erg Chebbi desert dunes, located near Erfoud, serve as a stand-in for the Egyptian desert.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010)

For a long time, the Prince of Persia video-game franchise had a cult-like following - with a Hollywood spinoff to boot. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, the movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley, and Alfred Molina, displays spectacular scenery of the Moroccan mountains, including Merzouga, Erfoud, Ouarzazate, Tameslouht, Oukaimeden, and Marrakech. Even the valleys and the deserts serve as a perfect background for Persia.

The plot revolves around Dastan, a rogue prince. He teams up with a mysterious princess to prevent an ancient dagger from releasing the Sands of Time – a gift from the gods that can reverse time and grant its possessor control over the entire planet. Little known fact - many local Moroccan craftsmen and artists contributed to constructing props and costumes, such as the blade that releases the sands of time and Prince Dastan's armor.

Black widow (2021)

Marvel fans reunite again as we talk about "Black Widow." After Avengers: End game, it sure was a treat to watch Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) back on screen and this time in Morocco. Black widow catches up with the now-adult Yelena Belova on a mission to hunt down one of her fellow Widows, who has freed herself from her chemical brainwashing and is on the run with an antidote that can liberate the other Widows.

This younger "sister" of Natasha approaches fights in a very different way, but she isn't afraid to get her hands dirty or risk her life to achieve the goal in front of her. The thrilling pursuit scene across roofs and down the sides of buildings was shot in Tangier, Morocco, a Mediterranean city. This Moroccan city has already been utilized for its beauty in spy films and the cast and crew were filming a few sequences nearby.

Aquaman (2018)

Okay, enough Marvel. Let's talk about the DC Universe (Ha! We are not done with superheroes yet). Remember the scene when Mera and Arthur dive out of the airplanes without a parachute and land in endless orange desert dunes? Well, the scene was shot in the Moroccon part of the enormous Sahara desert. The golden sand-sea set against the sapphire sky is a scene from a dream. Only in Morocco, this dream is a reality.

So, if you’re in the mood for adventure, you need to head on to Morocco, focus on the stunning desert-scape, hunt down the Kingdom of the Deserters and search for the armory where the trident was forged. From camel treks to overnight experiences, embark on the famous cinematic escape from Marrakech to Fes, the cultural capital of the country.
